Research Note

Although a 2012 consensus statement by the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology recommends vertebral heart scale (VHS) reference intervals be derived from populations of >120 subjects,1 few available studies of breed-specific VHS reference intervals adhere to this recommendation.2,3

This study re-evaluated published VHS reference intervals for Yorkshire terriers (n = 483), Pomeranians (n = 380), pugs (n = 391), and Boston terriers (n = 196). Records with at least 1 right lateral and 1 ventrodorsal or dorsoventral thoracic radiograph and no evidence of cardiopulmonary or systemic disease were included. VHS and vertebral left atrial size (VLAS) measurements were performed by the same board-certified cardiologist using the right lateral thoracic radiograph. Reference intervals are shown in the Table.
