Extrahepatic biliary obstruction (hyperbilirubinemia often present)

Inflammation or infection (hepatitis/cholangiohepatitis)
Neoplasia
Toxin or drug hepatopathy
Hepatocellular dysfunction or failure

Interference
Bile acids should not be measured in patients with hyperbilirubinemia
Lipemia falsely increases bile acid values
Hemolysis falsely decreases bile acid values
