Dietary Calculator for Weight Loss in Dogs
Bryce Talsma, DVM, MS, ACVSMR Resident, Colorado State University
Jason Bleedorn, DVM, MS, DACVS, Colorado State University
This calculator provides simple calculations for a patient's ideal body weight and daily caloric requirements for weight loss, while ensuring enough daily protein is provided when calories are restricted. If protein is too low, a more protein dense diet, a therapeutic weight loss diet, or consultation with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist to formulate a diet is recommended. Calculations for omega-3 fish oil supplements in patients with osteoarthritis, including added calories, are also provided.
Calculations are for dry kibble diets and do not account for the wet matter in canned foods.
How to Use the Dietary Calculator
Enter patient (including BCS, percent over ideal weight, and current body weight) and diet information. Nutritional data for commercial diets can often be found online. Include any additional food given.
The calculator will provide recommended energy requirements for weight loss, amount of diet to feed, treat allowances, and amount of protein. Senior dogs, dogs participating in rehabilitation, and dogs needing weight loss may benefit from being fed closer to 2 grams of protein per pound of lean body weight (if there is no evidence of renal insufficiency).
