This patient was presented 3 weeks after ovariohysterectomy at another practice. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a large gastric mass and peritoneal effusion. Cytology of the effusion was consistent with septic peritonitis. Exploratory surgery revealed 2 gauze sponges left in the abdomen; a reactive peritonitis was causing intestinal obstruction, and a resection and anastomosis of the small intestine was performed. Tapeworms were discovered during the procedure.
